Thomas F. Bayard, Sr. sends an autograph letter to Senator George F. Edmunds about his family.
Autograph Letter Signed: "T.F. Bayard" as U.S. Senator, 3p, separate sheets, 5x8. Washington, D.C., 1882 February 11. To Senator George F. Edmunds. In part: "The photograph I send you [not present] is of an original letter from Sir Philip Francis to his kinsman Col Turbutt Francis who was a brother of my great grandfather Tench Francis...The 'Little Freehold' he proposes 'to keep' 'on the banks of the Ohio is actually in Talbot County Maryland. It is or lately was in the hands of Philip Francis Thomas - lately a member of Congress from that district in Maryland, and Secretary of the Treasury under Buchanan's administration - History intertwines itself oddly.... The concordance of Milton's writings-compiled and published at Madras! Which you showed me last night illustrates this." Democrat THOMAS F. BAYARD, SR. (1828-1898) represented Delaware in the U.S. Senate from 1869-1885, when he resigned to become Cleveland's first term Secretary of State (1885-1889). Serving in the first Democratic administration since before the Civil War, Secretary Bayard was flooded with requests for office, but abided by his making appointments based on merit rather than partisan connections. His tenure was spent negotiating with Great Britain over outstanding questions of fishing rights. In his second term, President Cleveland appointed Bayard as Ambassador to Great Britain (1893-1897). Republican EDMUNDS represented Vermont from 1866-1891. Staple holes at upper left corner. Torn edges. Lightly creased.
