THOMAS F. BAYARD SR. - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED 04/21/1873 - HFSID 3182

THOMAS F. BAYARD SR
The future Secretary of State, Thomas F. Bayard, Sr., writes about his first public office.
Autograph Letter Signed: "T.F. Bayard", 1p, 5x6. Washington, D.C., 1873 April 21. To Mr. C.A. McCullough, New York. In full: "I was appointed U.S. Attorney in the Delaware District in 1853 and resigned the office in 1854." Democrat Thomas F. Bayard, Sr. (1828-1898) represented Delaware in the U.S. Senate from 1869-1885, when he resigned to become Cleveland's first term Secretary of State (1885-1889). Serving in the first Democratic administration since before the Civil War, Secretary Bayard was flooded with requests for office, but abided by his making appointments based on merit rather than partisan connections. His tenure was spent negotiating with Great Britain over outstanding questions of fishing rights. In his second term, President Cleveland appointed Bayard as Ambassador to Great Britain (1893-1897). Mounting remnants on verso (no show through). Nail head-size stain at lower blank right corner. Fine condition.
