Ink signature of the former Secretary of the Interior
Signature: "Thomas S. Kleppe/Sec. of Interior/1976-77", 5x3 card. Thomas S. Kleppe (1919-2007), former mayor of Bismarck and president of the Gold Seal company, was a US Representative from North Dakota (1967-1971). After losing a bid for a US Senate seat, he headed the Small Business Administration under Presidents Nixon and Ford (1971-1975) and as Secretary of the Interior (1976-1977). As Interior Secretary, he was the (successful) appellant in Kleppe vs New Mexico (1976), in which the Supreme Court upheld the power of the federal government to regulate federal land within a state. Fine condition.
