Book signed: "Tom Clancy", "Carl Stiner", 6¼x9¼, 548 pages. Shadow Warriors: Inside the Special Forces, by Tom Clancy with General Carl Stiner (Ret.) and Tony Koltz. New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1988. Hardcover with dust jacket. A pioneer of the techno-thriller, TOM CLANCY, JR. (1947-2013) combined his lifelong interests in the military and technology in his first novel, The Hunt For Red October (1984). The book, which became an instant best-seller, introduced his signature character, ex-Marine Jack Ryan, who became a government operative in later novels, including Patriot Games (1986) and Clear and Present Danger (1989). By 2000, Ryan was the newly elected President, facing sinister forces at work in China in The Bear and The Dragon. Clancy's most recent works feature Ryan's son in the leading role. Clancy's fiction has spawned numerous films and video games. CARL STINER (b. 1936) commanded many elite US military units, including the 82nd Airborne Division and the XVIII Airborne Corps. A Vietnam veteran, he had operational command of the US intervention force in Panama (1989) and of special forces operating in the first Gulf War. He commanded the US Special Operations Command from 1990 to 1993. Fine condition.
