VICE PRESIDENT AARON BURR - THIRD PERSON AUTOGRAPH LETTER 10/17 - HFSID 279417

AARON BURR
Aaron handwrote this third-person letter to a judge, asking for papers related to a court case. Matted to 10¾x8¾ in a blue-and-gold matte.
Third person autograph letter. 1 page, 6¼x4 (visible), matted to 10¾x8¾ in a blue-and-gold matte. Dated "Oct. 17". In full: "Mr. Burr presents respectful complts. & requests that Judge Edwards would have the goodness to send, by the bearer of this, the papers in Jackson vs DeLancey -" Burr (1756-1836, born in Newark, New Jersey), who had been admitted to the bar in 1782 following service in the American Revolution, moved to New York City in 1783. He served in the N.Y. State Assembly from 1784-1785 (again from 1798-1799) and as N.Y. Attorney General (1789-1790). In 1790, Burr was elected U.S. Senator from New York, defeating incumbent Senator Philip Schuyler, the father-in-law of Alexander Hamilton. Burr served until 1797, losing reelection to Schuyler. In the Nov. 4, 1800 presidential election, Burr and Thomas Jefferson each had 73 electoral votes. On the 36th ballot, the House of Representatives elected Jefferson President and Burr Vice President. On July 11, 1804, Burr challenged and mortally wounded Alexander Hamilton in a duel fought at Weehawken, New Jersey. Indicted for murder in New York and New Jersey, Burr was never tried in either state and completed his term as Jefferson's Vice President (1801-1805). Not matted in Gallery of History style. Letter has not been examined outside of matte. Letter is lightly toned, soiled and creased. Tackhead-sized hole near lower left corner (does not touch signature). Matte is damaged on back (no show-through). Otherwise in fine condition.
