VICE PRESIDENT RICHARD M. JOHNSON - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED 02/04/1828 - HFSID 56768

RICHARD M. JOHNSON. ALS: "Rh. M. Johnson" as U.S. Senator, 1p, 5x8. No place, (docketed February 4, 1828). With integral leaf addressed by Johnson to "Genl Alex Macomb/of the War Dept". In full: "A particular friend of mine has written to me to send him a copy of instructions as to the course of Studies & which are preparitory (sic) to an application to be admitted into the academy at W. Point. Please send me these as soon as convenient & oblige." Docket on integral leaf (unknown hand): "Hon RM Johnson asks/information as to Cadet/appointments and requests/the regulations to be sent him." Colonel of a Kentucky Regiment of mounted riflemen in the War of 1812, RICHARD M. JOHNSON was seriously wounded in the Battle of the Thames and reputedly killed the Shawnee Indian Chief Tecumseh. He was U.S. Senator from Kentucky (1819-1829) when he wrote this letter. In 1836, with no Vice Presidential candidate receiving a majority of electoral votes, then-Congressman Johnson became the only Vice President elected by the U.S. Senate. Van Buren and Johnson were renominated in 1840 but lost to Harrison and Tyler. ALEXANDER MACOMB (1782-1841), brevetted Major General in the War of 1812 for his victory at Plattsburg, was Chief of Engineers of the U.S Army when this letter was written. On May 29, 1828, three months after this letter was written, Macomb was named Commanding General of the Army with the rank of Major General. Lightly creased. Folds, vertical fold touches the "Jo" in Johnson. Signature slightly smudged.
