AVERELL HARRIMAN and CARMINE DeSAPIO. Partly Printed DS: "Averell Harriman" as Governor of New York and "Carmine G. DeSapio" as Secretary of State, 1p, 17½x15, mounted to a board of same size. Albany, New York, 1956 December 20. Appointment of Daniel P. Moynihan as Assistant Secretary to the Governor for Reports. Moynihan's first political job was on Governor Harriman's staff. He was 29-years-old at the time of this appointment. AVERELL HARRIMAN (1891-1986), Governor of New York from 1955-1958, served as Truman's Secretary of Commerce from 1946-1948. On the first ballot at the 1952 Democratic National Convention, Harriman was fourth out of 14 Democrats. In 1956, with Truman's backing, Harriman finished second to Adlai Stevenson. CARMINE DeSAPIO (1908-2004) was the boss of Tammany Hall, the New York Democratic machine which successfully promoted the nominations and elections of NYC Mayor Robert Wagner in 1953 and Governor Averell Harriman in 1954. In 1961, Wagner led a movement against boss rule and was reelected for a third term. DeSapio was ousted from his position as Tammany chief by reform forces and "Tammany Hall" ceased to exist. DIRECTLY FROM THE SALE OF THE ESTATE OF DANIEL PATRICK MOYNIHAN (1927-2003) who represented New York as a Democrat in the U.S. Senate for four terms (1977-2001). Slightly soiled edges. Ink mark (unknown hand) touches 2 words of text. ¼-inch circular stain at upper blank right margin. Overall, fine condition.
