W. AVERELL HARRIMAN - COMMEMORATIVE ENVELOPE SIGNED - DOCUMENT 65489

 
AVERILL HARRIMAN. Philatelic Envelope signed: "W. Averill Harriman", 6½x3¾. Cover honoring "Winston Churchill/Nov. 30, 1874 - Jan. 24, 1965/Honorary Citizen of the World - Man of the Century - Defender of Freedom", 5-cent U.S. stamp commemorating the anniversary of the Battle of New Orleans affixed, postmarked Washington, D.C., January 24, 1965. William Averill Harriman (1891-1986) was the son of railroad tycoon Edward Harriman. Active in business and finance in his youth, he later devoted himself to government service. Harriman was Ambassador to the Soviet Union (1943-1946) and then to Great Britain (1946), Secretary of Commerce (1946-1948), Governor of New York (1955-1959) and a candidate for the Democratic Presidential nomination (1952, 1956). As Ambassador at Large under Presidents Kennedy and Johnson, Harriman helped negotiate the Geneva Agreement on Laos (1962), the nuclear test ban treaty (1963) and the initial phase of the Paris peace negotiations on Vietnam (1968-1969). He was known as one of the so-called Wise Men who advised U.S. Presidents in the decades after WWII. Slightly creased. Ink smudged at the "m" in Harriman. Fine condition.
