W. AVERELL HARRIMAN - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 01/15/1931 - DOCUMENT 87676

AVERILL HARRIMAN. Typed Letter signed: "W. A. Harriman", 1p, 4½x7 with blank integral leaf. New York, N.Y., 1931 January 15. On personal letterhead to Lewis Strauss, New York, N.Y. [the TLS is addressed to "Louis Strauss", but 52 William Street was the address of the firm Kuhn and Loeb, where Lewis Strauss was employed.] In full: "It will give me pleasure to accept your kind invitation for dinner, Thursday, January 22nd, and meet your new partners. Sincerely yours". Averill Harriman (1891-1986) was the son of railroad tycoon Edward Harriman. Active in business and finance in his youth, he later devoted himself to government service. Harriman was Ambassador to the Soviet Union (1943-1946) and then to Great Britain (1946), Secretary of Commerce (1946-1948), Governor of New York (1955-1959) and a candidate for the Democratic Presidential nomination (1952, 1956). As Ambassador at Large under Presidents Kennedy and Johnson, he helped negotiate the Geneva Agreement on Laos (1962), the nuclear test ban treaty (1963) and the initial phase of the Paris peace negotiations on Vietnam (1968-1969). Harriman was known as one of the so-called Wise Men who advised U.S. Presidents in the decades after WWII. At the time of this letter, Harriman and Lewis Strauss (1896-1974), future Chairman of Atomic Energy Commission (1953-1958) and President Eisenhower's nominee for Secretary of Commerce, rejected by the Senate (1959), were both investment bankers. Slightly creased and soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
