WALTER GILBERT. Philatelic Envelope signed: "Walter Gilbert", 6½x3½. First Day Cover honoring Emily Bissell, initiator of the American Christmas Seal campaign, postmarked Wilmington, Delaware, May 31, 1980, 15-cent stamp affixed, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Gilbert (b. 1932) was co-recipient with Briton Frederick Sanger of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry (1980) "for their contributions concerning the determination of base sequences in nucleic acids." His method of decoding DNA helped spark the revolutionary advances biotechnology since that time. In 1988, he proposed the Human Genome Project to map the genetic structure of human beings. Fine condition.
