Wilbur J. Cohen sends letter regarding copies of letters from President Johnson
Typed Letter Signed: "Wilbur J. Cohen" as Dean of the University of Michigan School of Education, 1p, 8½x11. Ann Arbor, Michigan, 1974 December 17. To Frederick Casoni, Universal Autograph Collectors Club enclosing "copies of letters from President Johnson [not present]. The reproduction cost was $3.00. Please let me know if and what you plan to do with these copies." Wilbur Cohen (1913-1987) was an important player in the design of American social insurance legislation from the New Deal to the Great Society. As an employee of the new Social Security Administration (1934), Cohen helped shape that institution. He influenced the Eisenhower administration, the first post-New Deal Republican, to continue support for the system. In the Johnson and Kennedy years, he was a planner at the Department of Health, Education and Welfare, rising to Secretary of the Department (1968-1969). He also played a major role in the design of Medicare, adopted in 1965. Lightly creased. Fine condition.
