WILLIAM B. ALLISON - SIGNATURE(S) CIRCA 1899 CO-SIGNED BY: JULIUS C. BURROWS, GONZALO DE QUESADA Y AROSTEGUI - DOCUMENT 34983

WILLIAM B. ALLISON, JULIUS CAESAR BURROWS and GONZALO DE QUESADA Y ARÓSTEGUI
Album leaf signed by American politicians William B. Allison and Julius Caesar Burrows and Cuban revolutionary Gonzalo de Quesada y Aróstegui in 1899
Signatures: "W. B. Allison/Iowa" and "JC Burrows/Mich/Nov 29 99" and, on verso, "Gonzalo de Quesada" in black and blue ink. 6¼x3¼ with rounded top right corner. Black ink notations at left edge and under Allison and Quesada's signatures. ALLISON (1829-1908) was a U. S. Representative (1863-1871) and U. S. Senator (1873-1908) from Iowa. He co-sponsored the Bland-Allison Act in 1878, which restored the silver dollar as legal tender, and helped to pass the Hepburn Act, a railroad rate regulation bill, in 1906. BURROWS (1837-1915) was a lawyer and raised an infantry company to fight in the American Civil War before being elected Republican U. S. Representative from Michigan's 4th Congressional District (1873-1875, 1879-1883 and 1885-1893) and 3rd Congressional District (1893-1895), as well as U. S. Senator from Michigan (1895-1911). He supported civil rights for blacks and, as a senator, was a member of the Lodge Committee, which investigated war crimes from the Philippine-American War in 1902. Cuban-born QUESADA (1868-1915) fled to the United States with his family during the Ten Years War against the Spanish occupation. He studied law in New York City, where he came in contact with Cuban revolutionary Jose Martí. Quesada was appointed secretary of the Cuban Revolutionary Party and was later Minister Plenipotentiary of Cuba to the United States. Lightly toned, soiled and creased. Burrows' signature is lightly smeared but is legible, and is cut off at bottom edge. Light scratches on Quesada's side, which touch his signature. Show-through touches signatures. Irregular left and bottom edge. Otherwise in fine condition.
