3x5 card signed by the United States' first Secretary of Labor
Card signed "WBWilson". 5x3. Also with pencil notation in upper left corner in unknown hand in pencil. Wilson (1862-1934, born in Blantyre, South Lanarkshire, Scotland) was an American labor leader and the first Secretary of Labor under Woodrow Wilson, serving from 1913 to 1921. Wilson got his introduction to labor early; his family moved to Arnot, Pennsylvania in 1870 and he started mining coal from 1871, when he was eight or nine years old, until 1898. He became international secretary-treasurer of the United Mine Workers of America from 1900 to 1908 and was later elected, as a Democrat, to represent Pennsylvania's 15th district in the House of Representatives from 1907 to 1913. He served in a number of federal government positions, most notably Secretary of Labor, until 1926, then engaged in mining and agriculture near Blossburg, Pennsylvania. Lightly toned and creased. Otherwise in fine condition.
