WILLIAM BEEBE. Signature: "William Beebe", 3¼x1½, affixed to 8½x11 sheet. Charles William Beebe (1877-1962), a naturalist who taught himself taxidermy while still a teenager, was affiliated with the Bronx Zoo in New York for over 50 years. Beginning in 1905, he wrote a series of popular travel books detailing his studies as a naturalist. Originally focused on birds, Beebe shifted his research to deep sea creatures, beginning helmeted dives in the late 1920s. In 1932, Beebe and Otis Barton, the inventor of their "bathyscape", dived to a then record depth of 3,028 feet near Bermuda. Tackhead-size stain touches the upper loop of the "B" in Beebe, tackhead-size mounting paper remnant at mid-right margin. Ink notes (unknown hand) at upper left margin, 3 file holes at blank left edge. Slightly creased.
