The U.S. Congressman from Maryland signs his name in black ink
Signature: "W.H. Cole/ Baltimore/ Md." in black ink. 6¾x2 clipping. William Hinson Cole (1837-1886) was a United States Representative from Maryland. A native of Maryland, Cole studied both medicine and law in school before moving to Kansas City, Kansas where he opened a law practice and served as a member of the Kansas Territorial House of Representatives. With the outbreak of the Civil War, Cole enlisted in the Confederate States Army as a surgeon of the Eighth Georgia Regiment, serving in the Battle of Gettysburg where he took charge of the wounded in General Longstreet's corps. He was captured and held prisoner at Fort McHenry for six months. He returned to Baltimore where he served in local politics in the Maryland House of Delegates (1874-1878), and worked as a reporter on the Baltimore Evening Commercial, the Baltimore Gazette and The Baltimore Day. In 1885 Cole was elected to the U.S. House of Representative, and held that position for a year before his 1886 death. Irregularly cut. Toned. Light surface creases. Pinpoint ink stains throughout. Otherwise, fine condition.
