Typed note signed by the American journalist upon his return to England
Typed Note signed: "W. L. Alden", 1 page, 8x5. 61 Cloudesdale Road, Bulham [England], 1902 May 6. To "Dear Sir", in full: "I have just returned to England after an absence of sixth [sic] months, - a fact which explains my delay in answering yours of Feb. 24th. Very truly yours". American journalist William L. Alden (1837-1908) published articles in Scribner's, the Atlantic and other periodicals, and wrote a column, "Minor Topics", for the New York Times. He also wrote humorous and children's pieces. Alden founded the New York Canoe Club, the first such club in the US, and did much to promote the sport. Appointed Consul General in Rome by President Cleveland (1885-1890), he remained thereafter in Europe, writing from Paris and then from England. Multiple mailing folds. Toned. Mounting residue on verso. Signature light but legible. Otherwise, fine condition.
