William M. Jardine signed this typed letter on Secretary of Agriculture stationery in 1925 to thank a New York pastor for his good wishes. Signed during Jardine's first year as President Calvin Coolidge's Secretary of Agriculture.
Typed letter signed "W M Jardine". Pencil notations in top right corner in unknown hand. 1 page, 6¾x8¾, on stationery of the Secretary of Agriculture. ¾-inch embossed Seal of the U. S. Department of Agriculture. April 3, 1925. Addressed to the Rev. Paul R. Hickok of Second Presbyterian Church, Troy, New York. In full: "Dear Dr. Hickok: Thank you very much for your letter of March 28. I appreciate your good wishes and hope that the service I render here may come up to your expectations. Sincerely,". Jardine (1879-1955), formerly President of Kansas State University (1918-1925), served as Secretary of Agriculture under President Calvin Coolidge (1925-1929) and was U. S. Minister to Egypt in 1930. He played an integral part in the 1926 formation of the Board of Trade Clearing Corporation (BOTCC) after the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) adopted his suggestions for regular reporting of large trader positions, a business conduct committee and the formation of a centralized clearing house. Lightly toned and creased. Paper clip impression at left edge. Folded in half and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
