WILLIAM PITT AMHERST (FIRST EARL OF AMHERST)
His handwritten pass admitting the bearer to the House of Lords
Autograph Document signed: "Amherst", 1p, 4½x4½. (London), 1820
October 14. In full: "Admit the Bearer below the Bar of the House of
Lords on Tuesday next." The nephew of Baron Jeffrey Amherst,
Commander in Chief of the British Army (1772-1795), William Pitt Amherst
(1773-1857), Earl Amherst of Arakan, was British Envoy to Naples (1809-1811)
and Peking (1816-1817) and Governor General of India (1823-1828) during
which time he conducted a successful war against the King of Burma (1824-1826).
1¼x1½-inch paper loss at blank right margin from removal of wax seal (not
present). Light fingerprint-size stain at upper blank margin, pencil erasures at
lower margin. Mounting strip on verso, slight show through to blank left edge,
which is chipped at lower portion. Overall, fine condition.
