Color photo of team members celebrating their semifinal victory over the
heavily favored Soviet team, signed by 10 team members, most adding their

None was needed.
Photograph signed: "Jack/O'Callahan/USA/1980",
"John/Harrington/#28", "Mark/Johnson", "Craig Patrick",
"Mike Eruzione", "Phil Verchota/#27", "Jim Craig/#30",
"Ken Morrow/3", "Buzz Schneider/#25", "Steve
Janaszak/#1". In all 10 signers. Color, 8x10. In February 1980, the
US Olympic Hockey team defeated the heavily favored Soviet team in the
semi-finals of the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York, going on to beat
Finland for the gold medal. The US team, composed of college and amateur
players (though several had futures in the NHL) came from behind twice to defeat
a Soviet team which had won the gold at all of the last four Winter Olympics,
going 27-1-1 over that stretch. Although technically amateurs themselves, the
Soviet players had far more experience, and had been regularly beating teams
composed of players from the NHL. The US team came from behind to win 4-3,
and as time expired, breathless sportscaster Al Michaels exclaimed, "Do you
believe in miracles! Miracles on ice." Pravda did not report the results of
the game, and the Soviet players did not turn in their silver medals to have
their names inscribed. Sports Illustrated printed this photo on its cover of
March 3 without caption. Everyone in America knew what it represented.
