Autograph Sentiment signed: “Yours in sport/ George Marks/ Bristol City”, in black ink, 3x1¾.
William George Marks (1915-1998) was a goalkeeper who played for Arsenal, the
Blackburn Rovers, Bristol City, and Reading among others. After playing for his local club,
the Salisbury Corinthians, Marks joined Arsenal as an amateur, turning professional only
two months later. Although he played back up to George Swindin and Alex Wilson, during
the 1939-1939 season he did see some playing time in the final two games, one of which
was filmed for the movie The Arsenal Stadium Mystery. During the Second World War
Marks served in Northern Ireland in the Royal Air Force. He also continued playing for
Arsenal throughout the war (although official football was suspended, so the matches did not
count as official league play), winning one Football League War Cup and two Football League
South medals. In 1946, he was traded to the Blackburn Rovers. He then began playing for
Bristol City in 1948, but only stayed for two months before moving over to Reading, where
he spent five years before retiring from playing. After a two-year coaching stint with
Reading, he returned to his hometown and became involved in local politics. Signer on
