A DATE WITH DESTINY MOVIE CAST: BASIL RATHBONE, JOHN HOWARD and VERA VAGUE. Photograph inscribed and signed: "Basil Rathbone", "To Harold/Sincerely/John Howard" and "To Harold/Vera/Vague". B/w, 10x8. Movie still from the film, A Date with Destiny, ©1940, Paramount Pictures, Inc. Also known by the title, The Mad Doctor, Rathbone is the batty physician of the title, a sophisticated gentleman who woos and weds several of his wealthy women patients. Unfortunately the ladies have a bad habit of dying prematurely, with the above-suspicion doctor diagnosing these deaths as the result of disease. BASIL RATHBONE (1892-1967) was at his best in period costume dramas. He was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor for playing Tybalt in Romeo and Juliet (1936) and King Louis XVI in If I Were King (1938). He was Murdstone in David Copperfield (1934), Evremonde in Tale of Two Cities (1935), Pontius Pilate in The Last Days of Pompeii (1936), Karenin in Anna Karenina (1936) and Guy of Gisbourne in The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938). In 1939, Rathbone was cast as Sherlock Holmes in The Hound of the Baskervilles, the first of 14 screen appearances as Conan Doyle's master detective. He also played Holmes on radio from 1939-1946. JOHN HOWARD (1913-1995) is perhaps best known as the star of seven Bulldog Drummond films from 1937-1939. Howard starred in a number of feature films, including Lost Horizon (1937), The Philadelphia Story (1940), The Invisible Woman (1940), Father Takes a Wife (1941) and The High and the Mighty (1954), and appeared in a number of made-for-television movies and series, including Mission Impossible (1972), Baretta (1975) and Little House on the Prairie (1976). Howard had been a television pioneer, starring in Public Defender, the first filmed television series (1947). He made his Broadway debut six years later in Hazel Flagg (1953). American actress VERA VAGUE (1906-1974) usually played ditzy pals to the female lead in many 1940s musicals, but sometimes she played the lead. Vague was best known as a radio comic and also appeared on-stage. Creased. Typed notes on verso show through faintly at left background.
