A. E. W. MASON
As a Member of Parliament, he writes to Lord Curzon as Chancellor of Oxford University.
Autograph Letter signed: "A. E. W. Mason", 1 page, 5½x7. 17 Stratton Street, W [London], April 24, no year.To "Dear Lord Curzon", in full: "I will be at the dinner and I will be happy to be a steward. Also I will double my donation this year. I will let the Secretary know. Yours very sincerely". Ink note (unknown hand) at top: "A E W Mason MP". Prolific English novelist Alfred Edward Woodley Mason (1865-1948) is best remembered for The Four Feathers (1902), which has been made into at least seven films. Among his other well-known books were Fire Over England (1937), and five mysteries featuring Inspector Hanaud, beginning with At the Villa Rose (1910). He wrote three plays, including the successful Witness for the Defense (1911), and a biography of Sir Francis Drake (1941). During World War I, he was a Royal Army major, engaged in counter-intelligence in Spain and Mexico. While this letter is undated, it must have been written between 1906, when Mason was elected to the House of Commons, and 1910, when he left that office. George Nathaniel Lord Curzon (1859-1925), formerly the Viceroy of India and later Britain's Foreign Secretary, was out of office at that time, serving as Chancellor of Oxford University from 1907. Mason was an Oxford Alumnus; so he was probably volunteering here for additional service to his alma mater. Lightly toned. Mailing fold through center. Corners lightly worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
