Price: $200.00
A. EDWARD NEWTON. Autograph Sentiment signed: "A. Edward
Newton". 1p, 6½x8. In full: "To John M Patterson,/our Mayor that ought
to/have been with the/regards of/A. Edward Newton/July 13, 1923". Most
probably removed from the front flyleaf of a book. JOHN M. PATTERSON
(1874-1925), former judge of the Common Pleas Court, was a candidate for the
office of District Attorney at the time of his death. He had previously been a
candidate for nomination for Mayor of Philadelphia. Author A. EDWARD
NEWTON began his career as a book collector early in life and, when he died
in 1940, had amassed a library of over 10,000 first editions, primarily of
British authors. The sales of Newton's library were the high points of the
1941 auction season. One of the first books Newton wrote, The Amenities of
Book-Collecting and Kindred Affections, has become a classic. It
is interesting to note that Newton's books on books and book collecting are
now prized by book collectors. Top of page irregularly cut, nicks at left
edge. Tanned in right area. Lightly stained. Fine condition.
