Signature: “A.M. Aikin Jr.”. 5x3 index card. A.M. Aikin Jr. (1905-1981) was a
state politician who spent most of his life in the Lone Star State. After
working his way through college, he graduated from Cumberland University with
a Bachelor of Laws degree in 1932. He immediately ran for office, winning a seat
in the Texas House of Representatives. In 1937, he won a State Senate seat. In
total, he served in the Texas government for 46 years. The politician is
considered the father of modern Texas education, mainly for his role in the
passage of the Gilmer-Aikin Laws. Passed in 1949, the bill set teacher salary
minimums, provided state funds at a required level for other costs, and increased
state funding for schools. In the Senate, his numerous positions included
Chair of the Finance Committee (1967-1979) and Dean of the Senate
(1963-1979). For two weeks in 1943, he served as acting Governor of Texas.Note on verso in unknown hand. Otherwise, fine condition.
