A. MITCHELL PALMER
Letter referring a correspondent to the Alien Property Custodian
Typed Letter signed: "A Mitchell Palmer", 1 page, 6x7. Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, 1929 August 13. On personal letterhead to "Dear Sir", in full: "Your letter received some time ago. To explain the organization of the Alien Property Custodian would be too long a matter for a letter, and if you will write to the present Alien Property Custodian, I think he will [be] glad to send you a printed Government document which will explain the organization in detail. His address is Washington, D.C. Yours truly". Accompanied by typed transmittal envelope addressed to Louis Schwartz, Brooklyn, New York. Alexander Mitchell Palmer (1872-1936), who had represented Pennsylvania for three terms in the House of Representatives (1909-1915), became Attorney General in the final years of Woodrow Wilson's Presidency (1919-1921). As a Member of Congress, Palmer had been on the Democratic Party's progressive wing, championing worker health and safety, a progressive income tax, and votes for women. As Attorney General, Palmer earned a quite different reputation. Alarmed by a perceived communist threat to America, he organized the "Palmer raids," the rounding up of suspected subversives, targeting especially immigrants and labor activists. At the 1920 Democratic National Convention, Mitchell was second-highest vote-getter on the first ballot for the Presidential nomination. One vertical and one horizontal fold. Multiple staple holes throughout. Lightly worn. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
