ABRAHAM REEVES JACKSON
A letter from the doctor to an associate, asking if he has a copy of his "Address in Medicine" that he may have
Autograph letter signed: "A. Reeves Jackson", in black ink, 1 page, 5¾x9. January 12, 1876. Chicago, Illinois. In full: "My dear Sir: May I ask the favor of a copy of your "Address in Medicine" to the British Med. Ass 1844? I would welcome the necessary amount for postage if I knew a way to do it. Yours very Respectfully". Dr. Abraham Reeves Jackson (1827-1892) was a gynecological doctor and surgeon, notable for being a close personal friend of author Mark Twain. He met Twain while working as a surgeon on a cruise, and the two became close friends. It was also on this cruise that he would meet his future second wife Julia Newell. Twain's book about his travels during the time mention a doctor quite frequently, which Twain confirmed was indeed Jackson. Though not too much can be confirmed about Jackson's history, he did at one point open a gynecological hospital in Chicago, and was also the first president of the College of Physicians and Surgeons in Chicago. Surface creases. Normal mailing folds. Corners slightly worn. Toned. Lightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
