AMOS WESTCOTT: BUTTER CHURNING. ALS: "A. Westcott", 1p, 7¾x9¾. Buffalo, N.Y., 1864 April 10. To unnamed recipient, in full: "I will be in Syracuse on Thursday the 12th inst and pay the assessment on my shares of R.R. stock. P.S. The churn fever is prevaing [sic, prevailing] here to an alarming extent just now.- W". On verso of printed description of his invention, patented March 15, 1864: "A new and improved churn and butter worker/'The Dairy Queen'". On one 15½x9¾ sheet folded in half. The ALS is on the first page, the patent is on pages two and three; page four bears a docket by the recipient. Westcott's other inventions included door springs, door bolt, sash-fastener and improvements in cheese vats and devices for preventing door-keys from being turned (1850-1869). Lightly creased. Folds. Vertical fold touches the first "t" in Westcott. Pinhead-size holes at mid-cross folds. Slightly worn edges. Overall, fine condition.
