AARON WALTERHOUSE
Partial 1847 land transfer from Jackson County, Ohio, the illiterate
purchasers signing with their marks.
Document signed "Aaron Walterhouse" and "John Radeliff", also
signed with the marks of Joseph and Catharine Burbanks. 12¼x7¾. Jackson
County, Ohio, 1847 April 16. This is a partial document between Asa W.
Isham, whose signature isn't included, and Joseph and Catharine Burbanks in
Jackson County, Ohio. It transfers an unknown parcel of land from Isham to the
Burbanks, with Walterhouse, justice of the peace in Jackson County, and Radeliff
witnessing and Walterhouse authorizing. Joseph and Catharine were apparently
illiterate or otherwise unable to write their signatures; they had to put down
their marks instead. WALTERHOUSE was justice of the peace in Jackson
County and founded a school called the Jackson Academy. Lightly toned, spotted
and creased. Light crease and tears in upper right corner. Document has been
folded in four and unfolded. Torn along folds. Otherwise in fine
condition.
