ABBOTT & COSTELLO: LOU COSTELLO
Black and white publicity photograph of Lou Costello smoking a pipe.
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Terry/Best of Luck/Sincerely/Lou Costello". B/w, 8x10. ©1953, Universal Pictures Company, Inc. In 1953, Costello appeared in two feature films, Abbott & Costello Go to Mars and Abbott & Costello Meet Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, and he appeared on television on The Abbott and Costello Show (1952-1953) and as the co-host of three episodes of The Colgate Comedy Hour. With partner BUD ABBOTT, LOU COSTELLO (1906-1959) formed one of the greatest comedy teams in the history of show business. They mastered the straight man/clown relationship, creating a magical chemistry that took them from vaudeville and burlesque to radio, Broadway, film and television. The Abbott & Costello Show aired on radio on ABC from 1941-1946 and on NBC from 1946-1949. Abbott and Costello were also guest hosts of NBC's hour-long live variety show, The Colgate Comedy Hour, seven times between 1951-1954. Their "Who's on First?" routine is enshrined in the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Abbott and Costello split up in 1957 after troubles with the Internal Revenue Service left both men broke. Creased at blank margins and corners, which have tack holes. Chipped at lower left margin, 1¼-inch tear at that margin touches suit of image. Lightly soiled at lower right blank margin. Image is surface creased, touching facial image (barely evident head on). Light impressions at upper background. Tape repairs on verso, which is lightly soiled (no show through). Overall, fair condition.
