ABBOTT & COSTELLO: LOU COSTELLO Costello, on behalf of himself and his partner, Bud Abbott, signs an agreement with NBC regarding their use of "Bud Abbott and myself on the live television shows referred to". Carbon Typed Document Signed: "Lou Costello" in ink, 1p, 8½x11. No place, 1951 May 5. In letter form to National Broadcasting Co., Inc., Hollywood, California. Begins: "Gentlemen". In full: "In order to induce you to enter into the agreements hereinafter mentioned with Bud Abbott and myself and with TCA, a California corporation, I hereby represent and warrant that nothing in Bud Abbott's or my motion picture agreement of May 12, 1950, with Universal Pictures, nor any action or inaction on his or my part in connection therewith, nor any attempted enforcement by Universal Pictures or any provision thereof or of any remedies sought to be availed of by Universal Pictures thereunder, will prevent your use of Bud Abbott and myself on the live television shows referred to in and covered by the agreement dated March 27th, 1951, between you and Abbott and myself, nor, with respect to the films to be produced under and pursuant to the agreement dated March 27th, 1951, between you and TCA, will prevent or impair the use on television as contemplated by the parties of said films, either by other licensees of TCA in the event you do not exercise your option to use said films or by you as Licensee of TCA or a purchaser on foreclosure; and I therefore agree to indemnify and hold you harmless from any and all damages which you may incur (including without limitations loss of revenue from or liability to sponsors or default in payment of the loan referred to in your said agreement with TCA) in the event that your said use of Bud Abbott and myself on live television shows or the use of said films is so prevented or impaired. Very truly yours". In 1951, Costello appeared in two feature films, Abbott and Costello Meet the Invisible Man and Comin' Round the Mountain, with Bud Abbott. The following year, the duo would begin starring in the TV variety show, The Abbott and Costello Show (1952-1953). With partner BUD ABBOTT, LOU COSTELLO (1906-1959) formed one of the greatest comedy teams in the history of show business. They mastered the straight man/clown relationship, creating a magical chemistry that took them from vaudeville and burlesque to radio, Broadway, film and television. In 1938, Abbott and Costello got national exposure on the Kate Smith Hour radio show. They signed with Universal the next year for their film debut in One Night in the Tropics (1940). Their 1941 movie, Buck Privates (1941) with the Andrews Sisters, grossed what was then a company record $10 million, and in 1942 they topped a poll of Hollywood stars. Abbott and Costello had their own radio show (ABC, 1941-1946; NBC, 1946-1949) and television show, The Abbott and Costello Show (1952-1953), and the comedy duo were also guest hosts of NBC's hour-long live variety show, The Colgate Comedy Hour, seven times between 1951-1954. Their "Who's on First?" routine is enshrined in the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Abbott and Costello split up in 1957 after troubles with the Internal Revenue Service left both men broke. Lightly creased. Staple holes and file holes at upper blank margin, which has one-inch tear from lower portion of file hole. Slightly soiled from carbon. Overall, fine condition.
