ABBOTT LAWRENCE
Engraving of the businessman and politician who founded the city of Lawrence, Massachusetts
Engraving unsigned, 8x11. Facsimile signature featured at bottom center. Labeled beneath facsimile signature: "Likeness from a Photograph in the possession of the family." Issued by Johnson, Fry & Co. Publishers, N.Y. Abbott Lawrence (1792-1855) was a businessman and politician. After graduating from Groton Academy, he started working as an apprentice to his brother, Amos. The brothers eventually formed a wholesale mercantile business that specialized in imports from China and Britain. The union proved to be a highly-successful one and their firm, A. & A. Lawrence prospered even during economic hard times (e.g. 1812-1815). Lawrence became involved in politics and was elected to the 24th Congress as a Whig. Although he did not run for renomination to the following Congress, he was re-elected to the 26th Congress. Politically, Lawrence was a protectionist and supported railroad construction. A member of Boston's Unitarian Church, Lawrence made donations to a large number of causes and organizations including affordable housing programs in Boston as well as the Boston Public Library. Moreover, his contributions were essential to the founding of the Lawrence Scientific School at Harvard. Lightly toned, especially at edges. Corners and edges worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
