Signature: "Abraham Dowdney/ New York" 7¼x2. Abraham Dowdney (1841-1886) was a congressman from New York, as well as an officer in theUnion Army during the American Civil War. He attended private schools, and then went on to work in the building and contracting business. From 1862 to 1863, Dowdney served in the Civil War, becoming a captain in the One Hundred and Thirty-Second Regiment, New York Volunteer Infantry. After serving primarily in Virginia and North Carolina as a member of the XVIII Corps, he became chairman of the public school trustees of New York City from 1882 to 1885. Then, Dowdney was elected as a Democrat to the 49th Congress, and he served in that capacity from 1885 until his death. Lightly toned. Irregular cut. Left margin slightly frayed. Otherwise, fine condition.
