ABRAHAM FLEXNER
The American author writes to a couple in Hawaii and thanks them for sending him a pamphlet entitled The Hojoki.
Typed Letter signed: "Abraham Flexner", 1 page, 8x8¼. New York, New York, 1951 February 28. On his personal letterhead addressed to Dr. and Mrs. Gregg Sinclair, Honolulu, Hawaii. In full: "Dear Mr. and Mrs. Sinclair: I have recently received from you a pamphlet entitled The Hojoki. I am delighted to add this great Oriental classic to the other material that I have bearing on the East. We are living in the throes of the departing winter. The temperature goes up and down incalculably. Yesterday was a lovely spring day, and we were beginning to think that spring had actually arrived, but the weather bureau knew better for we were warned last night to return to our winter clothes. Today is chilly, and the sun is shining in a very spotty kind of way. We do envy persons like the Sinclairs who enjoy eternal spring in the Hawaiian Islands. With every good wish to you both, Sincerely your friend," American author and educator Abraham Flexner (1866-1959) is best remembered for his "Flexner Report" (1910) which examined the state of American medical education and led to widespread reform. A graduate of John Hopkins University, he served on the Rockefeller Foundation's General Education Board from 1912 to 1925. In 1908, Flexner published his first book The American College which was highly critical of the American education system and some of his other works include Medical Education in the United States and Canada (1910), A Modern School (1916), The Burden of Humanism (1926), Universities: American, English, German (1930) and I Remember: The Autobiography of Abraham Flexner (1940). Flexner also co-founded Princeton University's Institute for Advanced Study. Normal mailing folds. Paperclip indentation at top. Lightly crease. Otherwise, fine condition.
