He signs a typed letter as US Senator, thanking a Maryland resident for a
small gift.
Typed Letter signed: "A. Willis Robertson" as US Senator,
1 page, 8x10½. Washington, D.C., 1966 June 1. On letterhead of the US
Senate Committee on Appropriations to Mrs. Sara Bateman, Hagerstown, Maryland.
In full: "It was thoughtful of you to frame the very flattering
acrostic you sent me with your letter and I appreciate it very much. I also
appreciate your good wishes for me and I hope my signature on this letter will
be a useful addition to your autograph collection. With kindest regards, I am,
sincerely yours". Absalom Willis Robertson (1887-1971), a veteran of World
War I, represented Virginia in the US House (1932-1946) and Senate
(1946-1966). He was co-sponsor of the Pittman-Robertson Wildlife
Restoration Act of 1937, establishing and funding national wildlife areas. A
conservative Democrat, Robertson was a signer of the Southern Manifesto
opposing the school desegregation decision of Brown v. Board of Education. When
he wrote this letter, Robertson was facing a primary challenge from a more
liberal Democrat (William Spong) recruited by President Johnson. Robertson lost
this race, ending his public career. A. Willis Robertson is the father of
televangelist and Presidential candidate Pat Robertson. Normal mailing folds.
