ADDA GLEASON
10½x14 sepia photo, signed and inscribed to fellow silent screen actress Jane Novak in 1921. Rare signature!
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Jane -/Best love,/from/Adda -/'21". Sepia 10½x13¾. Photo by Peyton. Adda Gleason (1888-1971) was a leading lady in silent films of the 1910s, playing the title role in the very popular Ramona (1915). She was enmeshed in controversy after starring as King George III's scheming mistress in The Spirit of '76 (1917), a film which - in the midst of World War I - showed British soldiers raping women and bayoneting babies. The film's producer, Robert Goldstein, spent 3 years in prison for violating the Espionage Act, and Gleason's career also suffered. Her last prominent role was in The College Coquette (1929), but Gleason appeared in minor roles through the 1940s. Jane Novak (1896-1990), to whom Gleason inscribed this photo, had a similar career, with leading roles in silent films and minor parts in the talking era. Right edge slightly curled. Corners lightly creased. Minor crease across bridge of nose. Ink note (unknown hand) and ink stamp on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
