No place (but several several London addresses), 1947 February 19-22. ADELAIDE HALL (1904-1993) sang with Duke Ellington and starred frequently at the Cotton Club. She appeared in a series of revues, including Shuffle Along and Blackbirds of 1928, and lent her singing talents to such standards as "Sophisticated Lady", "Old Fashioned Love" and "Memories of You". She also lived in London and Paris, enjoying great popularity there. SHAW DESMOND (1877-1960) was a prolific Irish writer whose works included novels, stage dramas, poetry, history, travelogues and psychical research. LIONEL POULIN was a Belgian medical researcher resident in the UK, notable for cancer studies. ETHEL MANNIN (1900-1984) was a British novelist and left-wing political activist, married for a short time to Reginald Reynolds. Her Bread and Roses: a Utopian Survey and Blueprint (1944) was among the first to integrate ecological concerns into a socialist program. REGINALD REYNOLDS, a British author, wrote travel books and other works on topics as diverse as beards and beds. A Quaker, Reynolds functioned as a mediator between Mahatma Gandhi and the British government. ORLANDO MARTINS, born in Nigeria under British rule (1899), was a black character actor whose films included Men of Two World (1946), West of Zanzibar (1954) and Kongi's Harvest (1971). MICHELINA BUONOCORE was a British poet; her collections included El Dorado Forest and Last Portrait. (George) EMLYN WILLIAMS (1905-1987) was a stage actor who won a Best Actor Tony for A Boy Growing Up (1958). BASIL DEAN (1888-1978) was a British stage and screen actor, writer, director and producer. He founded Ealing Studios in 1931, and co-founded the English National Service Agency (ENSA), which provided entertainment to British troops during World War II. Although "Horne" has not been identified, the Coldstream Guards are the oldest, and one of the most elite, regiments of the British Army, dating from 1650. Battalions of the Coldstream have seen combat from the English Civil War to Afghanistan Eight additional signatures on this register are undecipherable or of unknown persons, meriting further research.
