ADELINE GENEE
Signed postcard photo in long fancy dress, white hat and fur stole
Postcard Photograph signed: "Yours Sincerely/Adeline Genee/'08". Sepia, 3¼x5¼. Adeline Genee (1878-1970, born Anita Jensen and sometimes billed as Adelina Genee) was a Danish-born dancer and pantomimist. By 1895 she was prima ballerina of the Copenhagen Opera House, before moving on to the same role in Berlin and (for ten years) at the Empire, London. She was equally comfortable in light music hall dances and pantomimes and in classical ballet, doing much to revive the popularity of the latter in England. In 1908, the year she signed this postcard, she made a successful tour of the US, billed by Flo Ziegfeld as "the world's greatest dancer." After 1916 she performed only at charity and commemorative events, but was president of the British opera teachers' association from its formation in 1920 until 1954. She was awarded a special medal by the King of Denmark and made a Dame of the British Empire. Creased at corners and lightly soiled. Adequate contrast. Pencil notes (unknown hand) on verso (no show-through). Otherwise, fine condition.
