Black and white publicity photograph of Adlai E. Stevenson III wearing a suit and tie
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Douglas Voegler/with best wishes/Adlai Stevenson". B/w, 8x10. ADLAI EWING STEVENSON III (born in 1930) is the son of ADLAI E. STEVENSON II (1900-1965), the former Governor of Illinois (1949-1953), two-time Presidential candidate (1952, 1956) and U.S. Representative to the United Nations (1961 until his death in 1965), and the great-grandson of ADLAI E. STEVENSON (1835-1914), a U.S. Congressman from Illinois (1875-1877; 1879-1881) and U.S. Vice President (1893-1897). Stevenson III, a Democrat who served in the Illinois House of Representatives (1965-1967) and was the state's treasurer (1967-1970), was elected to the U.S. Senate in a special election on November 3, 1970 to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Senator Everett McKinley. Stevenson, who began his term on November 17, was reelected in his own right in 1974, serving until 1981. In 1982 and 1986, he made unsuccessful bids for the state's governor's office. 2 file nicks at blank left edge. Fine condition.
