Sincerely,". ADLAI EWING STEVENSON III (1930-2021) is the son of ADLAI E.
STEVENSON II (1900-1965), the former Governor of Illinois (1949-1953), two-time
Presidential candidate (1952, 1956) and U.S. Representative to the United Nations (1961
until his death in 1965), and the great-grandson of ADLAI E. STEVENSON (1835-1914),
a U.S. Congressman from Illinois (1875-1877; 1879-1881) and U.S. Vice President
(1893-1897). Stevenson III, a Democrat who served in the Illinois House of Representatives
(1965-1967) and was the state's treasurer (1967-1970), was elected to the U.S. Senate in a
special election on November 3, 1970 to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Senator
Everett McKinley. Stevenson, who began his term on November 17, was reelected in his own
right in 1974, serving until 1981. In 1982 and 1986, he made unsuccessful bids for the state's
