Admiral Willis signs a letter of invitation for the 1944 Annual General Meeting of the Soldiers', Sailors' and Airmen's Families Association.
Typed letter signed: "A.U. Willis", in blue ink, 1 page 4¼x6. London, England, October 14, 1944. On his personal letterhead as Second Sea Lord of the Board of Admiralty, to "My Dear MacEwen [in his hand]" in full: "Thank you for your letter of 12th October. I shall be glad to be present at the Annual General Meeting of, the Soldiers', Sailors' and Airmen's Families Association on Friday, 8th December, and to give a short address", and his handwritten closing, "I should be very glad of this hope in due course. Yours Sincerely" Admiral of the Fleet Sir Algernon Usborne Willis (1889-1976) was a high ranking officer of the British Royal Navy, serving from 1904 to 1950. Beginning in 1941, two years into World War II, Willis was appointed his first Commander-in-Chief position as head of the of the South Atlantic Station. In 1943 he was Commander-in-Chief of Levant, during which he was responsible for Operation Husky. From 1944 to 1946 he was the Second Sea Lord on the Board of Admiralty. Before retiring, he again he served as Commander-in-Chief of the Mediterranean Fleet and Portsmouth. Creased. Binding holes at top edge. Pencil notations (unknown hand) at top edge and on verso (no show through). Light adhesive residue on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
