Price: $100.00
ARLEIGH BURKE
Signature of the wartime admiral who became Chief of Naval
Operations
Signature: "Arleigh Burke", SIZE? Ink notes (unknown hand) at
upper edge.) Arleigh Burke (1901-1996) led the "Little Beavers" destroyer
squadron in World War II, fighting 22 combat engagements in four months in the
Pacific. The squadron's high-speed dashes earned him the nickname "31 Knot
Burke". He was part of the "Revolt of the Admirals" in the late
1940s, an ultimately successful attempt by the Navy to prevent many of its
functions being transferred to the newly created Air Force, but was saved from
dismissal by President Truman's intervention. Burke commanded Cruiser Division
Five during the Korean War, and participated in the armistice negotiations. He
served as Chief of Naval Operations from 1955-1961, longer than any
predecessor. The Navy's current class of guided missile destroyers is
named for him. Lightly shaded blank right.
