ADMIRAL ARLEIGH A. BURKE - AUTOGRAPHED SIGNED PHOTOGRAPH - HFSID 290054
Price: $550.00
ARLEIGH BURKE
Signed in gold ink, shown in dress uniform, posed in front of a
painting of a destroyer at sea
Photograph signed: "Arleigh Burke". B/w, 8x10. Arleigh
Burke (1901-1996) led the "Little Beavers" destroyer squadron in World War
II, fighting 22 combat engagements in four months in the Pacific. The squadron's
high-speed dashes earned him the nickname "31 Knot Burke". He was part of
the "Revolt of the Admirals" in the late 1940s, an ultimately successful
attempt by the Navy to prevent many of its functions being transferred to the
newly created Air Force, but was saved from dismissal by President Truman's
intervention. Burke commanded Cruiser Division Five during the Korean War, and
participated in the armistice negotiations. He served as Chief of Naval
Operations from 1955-1961, longer than any predecessor. The Navy's
current class of guided missile destroyers is named for him. Scattered light
surface marks and creases, otherwise fine condition.
