ADMIRAL CHARLES BULLEN
Excusing himself on grounds of business in the House of Commons
Autograph Letter signed: "Charles Bullen", 1 page, 4¾x7¼. House of Commons, February 14 [1846]. To "My dear Sir", in full: "I am very sorry to be obliged to send an excuse. But unexpected business detains me here, and I cannot leave the House. Yours very truly". Sir Charles Bullen (1769-1853), as the son of John Bullen, the Royal Navy's Surgeon-General on North America Station during the American Revolution, himself served aboard British warships from age 10, promoted to Able Seaman. After studies in England, he rejoined the Royal Navy, participating in three of the greatest battles of the long war with France: the Glorious First of June (1794), Camperdown (1797) and Trafalgar (1805), commanding HMS Brittania with great success in the latter engagement. Recipient of many honors, including the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath, he was the last surviving captain of the Battle of Trafalgar. Multiple folds. Corners slightly worn. Surface creases. Soiled. Pencil notes (unknown hand) on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
