CHARLES F. HUGHES. Business Card signed: "C. F. Hughes" as Commander-in-Chief, United States Fleet, 3x1½. Printed with name of the Admiral's flagship, the U.S.S. Seattle. Charles Frederick Hughes (1886-1934) graduated from the Naval Academy in 1888. During the Spanish-American War, he served with Admiral Dewey's Asiatic Squadron. He was Chief of Staff to the Commander of the Atlantic Fleet during the occupation of Veracruz in 1914, and commanded the battleship New York during World War I, stationed at the British Royal Navy base of Scapa Flow. Commander-in-Chief of the Battle Fleet (1925-1927), he became Chief of Naval Operations in 1927, serving until his 1930 retirement. Mounting paper remnants show through faintly. Otherwise, fine condition.
