ADMIRAL DAVID D. PORTER
His signature, framed in the Gallery of History style with a picture and explanatory plaque to an overall size of 20x14
Signature: "David D Porter" as Rear Admiral, 4x1½ lined sheet, cut from letter. Matted and framed with an unsigned photo of Dixon in uniform and a metallic plaque. David Dixon Porter (1813-1891), a member of a famous naval family, was a leading Union naval officer during the Civil War. When the war erupted, he participated in the blockade of Pensacola, Florida. Porter later served under Admiral David Farragut in the attacks on New Orleans and Vicksburg in 1862. For his services at Vicksburg, Porter earned a promotion to Rear Admiral. His gunboats later helped win a foothold in North Carolina. After the war, Porter served four years as Superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy, improving its curriculum and physical plant. He went on to serve in the Navy Department and was promoted to Admiral in 1870. Porter also authored books on naval affairs and several novels. Signature slip slightly soiled. Fine condition.
