ADMIRAL DAVID D. PORTER
Admiral David D. Porter signed this manuscript letter in 1890 to ask for payment on an article that he wrote.
Manuscript letter signed "David D Porter". Pencil notations in bottom right corner. 1 page, 7¾x9¾, ruled paper. Washington, D. C., March 25, 1890. Addressed to Lloyd Bryce, Esq., New York City. In full: "Dear Sir, If it will make no difference to you I would like to receive the amount due me for the article on 'Discipline'. I have a nice little Typewriter and a Stenographer who are asking for their com-pensation. Respectfully yours". Porter (1813-1891), a member of a famous naval family, was a leading Union naval officer during the Civil War. When the war erupted, he participated in the blockade of Pensacola, Florida. Porter later served under Admiral David Farragut in the attacks on New Orleans and Vicksburg in 1862. For his services at Vicksburg, Porter earned a promotion to Rear Admiral. His gunboats later helped win a foothold in North Carolina. After the war, Porter served four years as Superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy, improving its curriculum and physical plant. He went on to serve in the Navy Department and was promoted to Admiral in 1870. Porter also authored books on naval affairs and several novels. Lightly toned, soiled and creased. Lightly torn at bottom edge. Tape repair on verso (no show-through). Lightly discolored in top corners. Folded in half horizontally and twice vertically. Otherwise in fine condition.
