Printed Card signed in ink: "David D. Porter/Admiral", 5x3¾ bearing green printed coat of arms with naval theme - affixed to a card 5¼x4 (cut unevenly). David Dixon Porter (1813-1891), a member of a famous naval family, was a leading Union naval officer during the Civil War. When the war erupted, he participated in the blockade of Pensacola, Florida. Porter later served under Admiral David Farragut in the attacks on New Orleans and Vicksburg in 1862. For his services at Vicksburg, Porter earned a promotion to Rear Admiral. His gunboats later helped win a foothold in North Carolina. After the war, Porter served four years as Superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy, improving its curriculum and physical plant. He went on to serve in the Navy Department and was promoted to Admiral in 1870. Porter also authored books on naval affairs and several novels. Horizontal fold crease 1" from lower edge.
