ADMIRAL OF THE NAVY GEORGE DEWEY.Appointed on March 3, 1899 by Act of Congress. TLS: "George Dewey", 1p, 8x10½. Washington, 1904 April 5. To William S. Ross, Corresponding Secretary, acknowledging "the receipt of your letter advising me of my election as an honorary member of the Ashford Historical Society of Brooklyn, and wish to express my thanks...." Admiral George Dewey was in command of the U.S. Navy's Asiatic Squadron based in Hong Kong in 1898 when the U.S. declared war on Spain. Commanded to sail to Manila and capture or destroy the Spanish fleet based there, he engaged the fleet in Manila Bay early on May 1, 1898, completely destroying it by noon without a single loss of American life. Lightly creased. Paper clip rust stains at left margin. Lightly soiled. Erased pencil notes at upper left (unknown hand).
