GEORGE DEWEY
Written during the time the Democrats wanted the war hero to run for President.
TLS: "George Dewey", 1p, 8x10½. Washington, 1900 June 18. To Rev. W.E. Barton, D.C., Oak Park, Illinois. In full: "I am in receipt of your letter of the 15th instant, in regard to the approaching celebration at Three Oaks, Mich. Please convey to the people of that village my sincere regret that I am unable to be with them, my congratulations on securing the trophy which is to be dedicated, and my best wishes for their prosperity both as individuals and as a village." During the Spanish-American War, GEORGE DEWEY (1837-1917) destroyed the Spanish squadron in the Battle of Manila Bay (July 1, 1898). In March 1899, Dewey was made Admiral of the Navy, a rank created especially for him and the highest held by an American naval officer. In April, two months before he wrote this letter,Admiral Dewey announced from Washington his willingness to serve as President "if the American people want me for this high office". A cartoon published in the July 7, 1900 issue of "Harper's Weekly", about two weeks after this letter, pictured Dewey on the floor of the Democratic National Convention. Folds, vertical fold touches the "D" in Dewey, lightly creased. Pencil note (unknown hand) on verso (show through at upper margin). Overall, fine condition.
