ADMIRAL GEORGE KEITH ELPHINSTONE (VISCOUNT KEITH)
Undated letter inviting friends to stay at his cabin on Malta
Autograph Letter signed: "Keith", 1 page with integral blank, 7¼x9¼. No place, no date ("28th"). To Mrs. Tom Pollard, in full: "If P and you are really going to Malta and will take my Cabin and such fare as I can give you, I will with pleasure accommodate you and I hope on the morrow evening or day following. I have been ill and am not yet able to go about. Yours faithfully ever". George Keith Elphinstone (1746-1826) joined the Royal Navy at age 14. On a voyage to the East Indies, he parlayed a loan from his uncle into a personal fortune. During the American Revolution, Elphinstone commanded the HMS Warwick, fighting privateers, participating in the attack on Charleston and capturing a the 50-gun Dutch warship. During the wars with France, he participated in the capture of Toulon, leading a successful combat mission ashore. Promoted to Rear Admiral in 1794, he participated in the capture of the Dutch Cape Colony (1795) and defeated a Dutch squadron at Saldanha Bay. He convoyed the British army to Aboukir for the re-conquest of Egypt from Napoleon. By now a full Admiral, he was Commander in Chief for the North Sea (1803-1807) and English Channel (1812, charged with preventing a French invasion). Elevated as Viscount Keith in 1814, he personally conveyed Britain's surrender terms to Napoleon. Elphinstone appears in several of Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey-Maturin maritime novels. Multiple folds. Toned. Corners lightly worn and creased. Surface creases. Ink notes (unknown hand) on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
